Service Description

By the end of the Module students will be better equipped to know the terms used in sewing and on patterns. They will also know the basics on how to use a sewing machine, what not to do when sewing, how to troubleshoot and how to read and alter a pattern. Level: Beginner Topics: How to use a sewing machine. Learning the sewing basics What not to do when sewing. Troubleshooting. How to read a pattern and alter it. Week 1 How to use a sewing machine. The following will be covered during this lesson. Sewing health & safety. Threading the machine. What bobbin to use. Loading bobbins. Threading bobbins. Week 2 Learning the sewing basics. The following will be covered during this lesson. What are the different stitches used for. Sewing terms. How to pin & do basting/tacking by hand. Needle alignment. What the marking on the foot plate is for. Line-up fabric on seam lines. Straight stitch. The students will cut squares from material and batting for a coaster. They will put the fabric together, pin and tack it together. The students will then sew the inside stitches leaving a gap for the coaster to be turned inside out. The coaster will be ironed, and the opening will be folded in and ironed flat. The students will then straight stitch right round the edge. The students will cut out and complete 3 more coasters as they have learnt. Week 3 What not to do when sewing. The following will be covered during this lesson. The 10 most important things not to do when sewing. Continue finishing coasters and straight stitch practice. Week 4 Troubleshooting problems & Stage 1 how to reading a pattern The following will be covered during this lesson. Things to check before you start sewing: Troubleshooting possible problems: How to take body measurements correctly Students will open the bobbin area and make sure it is clean. They will check the needles and the bobbin and machine threading. Will reinstall the bobbins. The students will measure each other for correct size. Week 5 Learn how to read and adjust patterns The following will be covered during this lesson. Different types of patterns (envelope and pdf). Pattern instructions and the keys. Pattern symbols Sizing. Fabric requirements. Week 6 & 7 Complete clothing piece Continue sewing the clothing piece. The fabric is excluded from the price.
